  2. SCO Online Support - Technical Library Supplements
  3.  
  4. As you know, the SCO Online Support system provides various
  5. support and educational materials for interactive access via WWW
  6. browsers, our BBS systems, anonymous uucp and ftp.  
  7. These facilities are provided at ftp.sco.com, www.sco.com, and
  8. ftp.uu.net in North America (a few exceptions noted below). 
  9. In addition, many of the supplementary files are provided in the
  10. LIBraries of the SCOFORUM on Compuserve.
  11.  
  12. Europeans may find the SCO mirror site in England more acccessible:

  15. At the SCO sites, the directories online are:

  30. Each of these directories has a README or "info" file that describes
  31. the material therein, and they are fairly self explanatory.

  34. This README describes the Technical Library Supplements.
  35.  
  36. The files in TLS are offered for experimental or educational use.  They
  37. are provided "as-is" to knowledgeable users as a courtesy.  The TLSs
  38. are NOT supported by SCO Support department.   Please do not contact
  39. the friendly folks in the Support department about these files; rather,
  40. direct your comments to the original authors (where named), or to me.
  41.  
  42. In some cases, these are components or updates to existing SCO
  43. Software.  Some of the programs here may be compiled or derived
  44. from freely available copyrighted sources.  Other material may be
  45. educational or supplementary documentation.  All use of this
  46. material is the sole responsibility of the user, and you MUST
  47. observe the copyright and licensing restrictions that are
  48. provided in the cover letters, documentation, and code.
  49.  
  50. We do not intend this to be yet another archive of freely
  51. available software that has been compiled for SCO.  That function
  52. is well served by other archive sites (thanks!).  The material
  53. here is primarily that which SCO uniquely can provide, or which
  54. is not readily available elsewhere.  For other archive sites,
  55. consult the periodically posted list of SCO-related ftp sites in
  56. one of the SCO-related Usenet newsgroups or on Compuserve SCOFORUM.
  57.  
  58. Usually, you will need a licensed SCO operating system to use
  59. these files, and any SCO-owned code here is provided to you under
  60. the terms of your SCO software license(s).  You will also need a
  61. good understanding of how to use the SCO system, and a certain
  62. amount of daredevil, thrillseeking enjoyment of interesting and
  63. colorful results.
  64.  
  65. The available supplements are listed below.
  66.  
  67. These files can be downloaded interactively from the SCO Online
  68. Support BBS.  Follow the menus in the "software toolchest"
  69. selection.  We support kermit, Xmodem, Ymodem and Zmodem.
  70.  
  71. These files are also accessible via anonymous uucp (see below), and
  72. by anonymous ftp, and of course with a suitably configured Internet web
  73. browser.
  74.  
  75. The TLS files are also available as one of many goodies
  76. on the SCO Skunkware CD-ROM.  This promotional CD-ROM is
  77. available at various times and places; contact your SCO supplier
  78. for more info on Skunkware (or join the SCO Developer Alliance).

  124. Generally, we name the TLS distribution files like this:
  125.   
  126.        tlsxxx.1   = binary floppy image, volume 1
  127.        tlsxxx.1.Z = same thing, but compressed
  128.        tlsxxx.ltr = cover letter, ascii file - install info, etc.
  129.        tlsxxx.c   = source code file
  130.        tlsxxx.doc.Z = documentation and other propaganda
  131.        tlsxxx.tar.Z = tar archive file, compressed.
  132.        tlsxxx.tar*  = tar archive file                 
  133.        tlsxxx.ps    = postscript file
  134.        <something else> = miscellaneous documentation, etc.
  135.        tls5xx.*     = TLS targetting SCO OpenServer Release 5
  136.   
  137. Files ending in .Z have been reduced in size by the compress
  138. utility.  The compress and uncompress utilities are included with
  139. SCO XENIX releases 2.3.0 and later, SCO UNIX, and SCO Open
  140. Desktop.  In some cases, we have compressed using the -H option
  141. (LZH algorithm).  Your version of compress in SCO UNIX version
  142. 4.0 or later understands this.  If you have an older compress
  143. utility, you may need to download the newer version of compress
  144. in tls031.
  145.  
  146. Note also that you can get sosco to do the uncompress for you if
  147. you use ftp and refer to the file name without the final ".Z" For
  148. example, to receive an uncompressed copy of tls042.1.Z, enter get
  149. tls042.1 and ftp will uncompress before transmission.  Of course
  150. you want to avoid this if possible, since the uncompressed file
  151. takes longer to transmit.
  152.  
  153. We do not compress all floppy images.  Some SCO distributions
  154. have files that are already compressed and to compress again is
  155. counterproductive.  Some TLS files may just be tar files, not floppy
  156. images.  In some cases the uucp g protocol may raise alarms when used
  157. with certain modems that perform data compression.  If you get
  158. uucp alarms, try turning off data compression in your modem, if it is
  159. used.
  160.  
  161. There are a few gaps in the numbering, due to TLSs not yet ready,
  162. withdrawn, and other assorted reasons.  Also, you may see some
  163. numbers "reserved" for future additions.
  164.  
  165. Anyone is welcome to redistribute this notice to other newsgroups or
  166. customers.  If you have comments about these distributions, feel free to
  167. contact me.  E-mail _strongly_ preferred.  In some cases, authors have
  168. provided their names and indicated willingness to correspond about the
  169. TLSs.   Check the cover letters for author info.
